It Wasn't Supposed to be Like This

It wasn't supposed to be like this...

It wasn't supposed to be like this...

Last Saturday, I went to the Bishop's Garden on the National Cathedral Grounds to enjoy the lovely weather and beautiful flowers. Washington, DC had transitioned to the first phase of reopening after the crush of COVID-19. It was peaceful. Birds and butterflies in the cool spring sunshine.

Later, I worked on this newsletter. As afternoon turned to evening, the chirping birds were replaced by the low chucking sounds of not so distant helicopters. Circling. Ominous.

On Sunday, I deleted the draft of my newsletter. As the enormity of the situation became clear, I realized my topics had no place in the unfolding events.

Just five days later, and only fifty yards from where I had knelt to photograph the blooms of life’s tentative return to normal, I now knelt in silence for eight minutes and 46 seconds in recognition of another, much darker normal. My family joined hundreds of others who had come together at the same cathedral to find community and voice outrage at what they had seen - a life senselessly taken away.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this in America. But it is. And we all need to take ownership of making it change.

SecondFifty is not a political blog. But this is not a political matter. George Floyd deserved more.
