Book Review - Built to Move

What's with the shoes?!? You'll find out in the below video I filmed of me attempting to perform two balance assessments from Kelly and Juliet Starrett’s new book, Built to Move – The Ten Essential Habits to Help You Move Freely and Live Fully.Remember the Sitting and Rising Test, and how it's an accurate predictor of all-cause mortality in older adults? Well, so is balance, and these two simple balance diagnostics are a good place to start. If you have trouble performing them, your balance is compromised. Poor balance leads to falls and falls lead to bad outcomes. The good news is, with a little effort, you can improve your balance, and you can also improve your mobility and your strength, so you avoid falls in the first place and recover faster if you do tumble. Built to Move is an easy read, filled with practical advice and well-illustrated examples of how you can improve and maintain mobility and range of movement. The book is written for everyday folks, not fitness nuts. Starrett is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, author of several exercise books, speaker and CrossFit trainer. He is a co-founder, with his wife Juliet Starrett of the fitness website The Ready State. His core philosophy, that everyone should be able to perform basic maintenance on themselves, fits well with the SecondFifty ethos. From the introduction: “The premise of Built to Move is simple: ten tests, plus ten physical practices equals ten ways to make your body work better”. Take the very manageable assessments, see where you are deficient, then do the mobilizations/stretches/exercises, and you will move better and feel better. It’s that simple. There's also information on sleep, nutrition and breathing. Oh, and here’s an article from the New York Times explaining in more detail the one-foot balance study and the negative consequences for those who have lost balance. Now, take a look at the video and try it yourself! Happy Fathers Day!. George.

I will admit to looking pretty foolish doing the One Foot Balance Test! But check out this 3 minute video and try it yourself!
