My Interview With Wendy Bounds - Author of "Not Too Late, The Power of Pushing Limits At Any Age"

SECONDFIFTY INTERVIEW

I recently sat down with author Gwendolyn Bounds to discuss her new book, Not Too Late.

We discuss her journey to athleticism and how she balances sport with family, a career, and more. Here’s a link to the SecondFifty Homepage where you will find the interview.

Wendy is competing this very weekend in the Spartan World Championships in Sparta, Greece. And from what I can see on the results page, she is finishing in the top ten in her age group. Amazing!

A HALLOWEEN SCARE

This is not a costume!

A tiny freckle appeared on my forehead over the summer. I checked in with my dermatologist, she did a scrape of it and sent it to the lab, and it turned out to be a melanoma… My first brush with skin cancer.

They say married men live longer, because their wives convince them to see a doctor sooner than later. I’m glad I listened!

So here’s my PSA about skin care. Get an annual checkup, and if you see something new, even something tiny that looks different, get it checked out. I was lucky, my melanoma was classified as “insitu, or stage 0. It hadn’t penetrated through the upper skin layers, and had not yet spread.

But here’s the thing, if this is what the procedure looks like at the earliest stage, I hate to think what has to be done for a later stage melanoma! Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, with one in five Americans likely to develop it in their lifetimes. The rates of melanoma have doubled in the last thirty years.

My biopsy came back clean. The plastic surgeon got it all. But you can bet I’m going to be more careful about applying sunscreen in the future. Did you know its the sun, more than just age, that causes most changes to skin as we get older?

Here’s a good, simple article on the topic from Consumer Reports. “Why your skin needs sunscreen all year long”.
